Pimping the Church (Part 1 of 2)

A few weeks ago, I watched a four part series on sex trafficking in the United States.  Needless to say, as a dad to a gaggle of girls, my heart was broken at this tragedy and at the same time, I was infuriated by the evilness of this world.  As always, I have a habit of looking at this atrocity  in another perspective…from the perspective of a follower of Jesus.  What I realized is that we’re constantly pimping the Bride of Christ using many of the same tactics of sex traffickers.  Let me explain…

xxxchurch The sex industry is by far one of the hottest items on the market.

Here’s what I mean:

  • There are more women are employed by the sex industry than any other time in history.
  • There are more strip clubs in the United States than any other nation in the world.
  • Human trafficking is the second largest global organized crime today, generating approximately 31.6 billion USD each year. Specifically, trafficking for sexual exploitation generates 27.8 billion USD per year.
  • There 1.39 million victims of commercial sexual servitude worldwide.

But what we all know about the sex industry is that it leaves its consumers with an emptiness that they’d thought was sure to be filled, only to come back again wanting more.  It never. fills. the void.

Likewise, we’ve created a sickening culture of consumerism within the church using similar selling strategies as the sex industry.  We exploit the Bride of Christ (the Church) in order to keep her customers coming back for more.

  • We dress her up in skimpy clothes that we like to call ‘ministries’.
  • We cake the cosmetics on her face that cover her imperfections, warts, scars and wrinkles.
  • We only let her work certain blocks so as not step into someone else’s territory, thereby sucking revenue from the other pimps and hustlers.

And her customers keep coming back for more.  For a short while, their appetites have been satisfied, BUT this is short-lived.  They begin to see through the makeup and skimpy clothes and begin to want more, better. . .  They want a change.  So they shop on a different corner, a new block, looking for just the right one.  And they’ll pay top dollar to get the right one.

Can you see the relation?

How can we end this madness?  When will the exploitation stop?

I believe there is hope.  I believe there is a Husband who will not stand to see his Wife treated this way…

More thoughts coming in Part 2.

The first time God spoke to Hosea he said: ‘Find a whore and marry her. Make this whore the mother of your children. And here’s why: This whole country has become a whorehouse, unfaithful to me, God.'”  ~Hosea 1:2
